THE ROUTE LAURA ORDAINED for Wes and Adison, sent them south instead of north. Therefore, the air was hot and arid when they reached Duncan. It made Adison wonder if Wes was right about wearing more sensible clothing. Unfortunately, they didn’t see a clothing store on the way through the small town, that boasted of Indian cave paintings, arrow heads, Indian pottery, and burial sites.

Nestled in the Gila River Valley, just four miles from the state line, they stopped first at a small market, and bought something for lunch. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find anything with the name of the town on it. Next, they visited a collectibles store that had everything from toys to cowboy boots. From several shelves full of toys, Adison grabbed all the bears she could find, while Wes found a key chain with the name of Duncan on it. When it came to a New Mexico State flag, all the clerk had to offer was a plastic one.

“Doubt you could find a cloth flag except maybe in Albuquerque,” the clerk said.

Adison was disappointed, but oh well, they could keep looking. Besides, the loss of one flag wasn’t going to hurt them, not with the number of bears she was already able to collect. After all, five bears equaled one state flag, and bears were the most popular toy in the world. She only briefly considered how unfair that was to her sisters – only briefly.

Back in the car, Adison and Wes stopped at the state line, took pictures, and headed off to see how close they could get to their next destination – Roswell, New Mexico, before six o’clock. They spent so much time shopping along the way, Adison was worried they wouldn’t find a hotel in time, but she didn’t mention it. The last thing she wanted to do was spend the night in a car.

It occurred to her that she should have more faith in Wes. After all, Garrick chose Wes to be her team mate, and surely Garrick knew Wes would do all he could, to see that she didn’t have to spend a night in a car. She also realized she wasn’t being very good company, and that Wes was gracious enough to respect her privacy. Still, she couldn’t get Garrick off her mind. Was she in love with him like Yvette said? And wasn’t it odd that she was even talking to Yvette about being in love? After all, it was Yvette who destroyed her relationship with Blake, and thereby broke Adison’s heart. Then again, their private discussions about Garrick was for Ondrea, so it wasn’t that odd after all.

The car accident that killed their parents wasn’t the only time they almost lost Ondrea. She’d never been the strongest of the three, physically, anyway. When the flu hit or even just a common cold, it was Ondrea who suffered the most and the longest. Many were the nights Carolyn stayed by Ondrea’s bed, running a humidifier, seeing that Ondrea drank enough liquids, and that her fever didn’t spike too high.
